Jade Leyva is the creator and coordinator of the Community Seed Mural Project. She is a visual artist and understands the powerful tool that art can be. She founded the project and has been working on it for the past three years for zero profit and she has funded a good part of it.
SEEDS: A Collective Voice/Community Seed Mural Project started in the beginning of 2013 as the brainchild of Mexican born-New Mexico based Artist Jade Leyva and as the first multi-media art exhibit in New Mexico focused to bringing attention to ancient and organic seed preservation. In three years, it has blossomed into an international, multi-dimensional project that has been presented in México and with extended relationships in Europe, New Zealand and across the US.
SEEDS organically grew into several branches including a documentary and book (in collaboration with Photographer Jim Holbrook) that are in the works as well as an ongoing arts-based educational program The Community Seed Mural Project has been invited to several schools in New Mexico, as well as public events and institutions, where a variety of diverse communities join together to work on creating murals out of seeds. During our visits to classrooms, students and teachers work on the seed murals while volunteer experts from different fields lead discussions to raise awareness on several important related topics including seed and bee preservation, organics, community nutrition, sustainability and their connection to a healthy environment.
The goal is while creating awareness on environmental subjects, we will complete 10 murals - we are currently working on the 9th one - all of which will be displayed together as an art installation in partnership with the Education Department at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on September 9, 2016.
SEEDS: A Collective Voice/Community Seed Mural Project is proudly represented by Non-Profit Educational & Music Arts Organization Avokado Artists and The Community Seed Mural Project is partly funded by the McCune Charitable Foundation
